Mt. Washington Race Report

6/22, Mt. Washington, NH

Mount Washington is the most competitive mountain race in America ...
which was again in evidence this year! Since it's so hard to break
into the top 15, Mountain Cup points are hard to score here, but the
scoring system compensates for that, awarding 2 bonus points for every
top ten runner beaten.

This means the winner, Rickey Gates, scored 6 bonus points for 26
total, vaulting him instantly into 4th position Overall. Shiloh
Mielke added a hard-fought 3 points, keeping him in the solid lead,
now being the only person to have done each of the first three
Mountain Cup events. Matt Byrne's outstanding 4th place added 17
points to move him into 2nd Overall. Jason Bryant had a breakthru
race, easily beating Mielke, moved into 5th Overall, and demonstrated
he is to be reckoned with.

For the Women, Brandy Erholtz crushed the field at Mount Washington,
scoring 22 points, and as the dominant female mountain runner in the
US now, will assuredly score more at next months Barr Trail Mountain
Race. Lisa Goldsmith was 5th here, moving her into 4th Overall.

Next up is the July 12th Barr Trail Mountain Race. The Mountain Cup
gets very serious here - this field is always very competitive, so
while it's hard to score points, a good runner has the potential to
score a lot, as they will be running against many other Mountain Cup
competitors.

Both Mielke and Bryant will be flying in for the BTMR. Rickey Gates
is headed to Europe to race, Eric Blake will return to running
Marathons, so they will not be contenders; 3rd place Tom Haxton is
keeping his Mountain Cup strategy to himself.

The Women's event will be especially worth watching at Barr Trail -
the current top 5 Mountain Cup runners will all be there! This is
what racing is all about.
