La Sportiva Mountain Running

Athlete Training Tip - Karl Meltzer

What keeps you going?

Addiction more than anything. I get lazy if I take a few days off.

What's next for 2009?

Run 7 100s, win at least one, which will give me 1 100 mile win 10 years in a row.

Training Advice?

I'm a coach too, so they have to pay for this kid's advice. :-)

But saying Tempo and hill running is the key to my success. When running uphill, stand tall and move legs with a faster cadence, the long loping stride over time will end up being a slower way to the summit. Think of quality over quantity. Running more than 25 miles at a pop makes it tough to recover for a good run the next day. And run with what you race with, train yourself to always have a fanny pack, handheld, or hydration pack on. It'll prevent unnecessary chafing and issues. Knowing exactly where you have all you're race goodies, keeps the brain fresh instead of stumbling around looking for something.

Sample Training Log

I only run on feel, so as I keep a log, it only get's logged after each day. I don't follow a specific schedule ever. I train just below the level of being "tired".

Monday: run
Tuesday: run
Wednesday: run
Thursday: run
Friday: run
Saturday: run
Sunday: maybe a day off per week......roughly 65 mountain miles per week.
